Second African Penguin Chick Hatches At National Aviary
PITTSBURGH (KDKA/AP) – A second African Penguin chick has hatched at the National Aviary.
The chick was spotted at 10:13 a.m. on the webcam, just like the first one.
Penguin specialists say it hatched sometime last night.
The National Aviary says 25,000 people a day have been watching the nest cam, awaiting the birth of the second chick.
Monday morning, the National Aviary captured the birth of the first African penguin chick on the nest cam.
Four chicks have hatched and grown to full size in the past few years.
The new chick brings to 18 the number of African penguins in the aviary's Penguins Point exhibit. Scientists estimate fewer than 20,000 exist in the wild.
The penguins are raised by hand after they're about 21-days-old, making them comfortable with the staff and the public.
The chicks will be named after DNA tests can determine their genders in a few weeks. Their father is named for Pittsburgh Penguins star Sidney Crosby.
