Searching For Giants Fans In The City Of Black & Gold
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- From the City by the Bay to the Golden Triangle makes for a long trip.
But our assignment was to find some black and orange in a river of black and gold.
We headed for the Strip District, where a Pirate fan told us, "There are no Giants fans in Pittsburgh."
A continued search made us think she was right, though we did meet a family that left New Jersey at 5 a.m. to root for the Buccos.
"Two kids throwing up on the way in and we still made it in," the father said.
Even vendor Emily Dausch, of The Looney Bin, had yet to see a Giants fan. But John Coen, of Yinzer's, says he actually has encountered fans of that other team
"They joke around and ask for Giants gear, but they know we don't have anything," he said. "They just like to come and look at the store. And we always joke back with them, like how we burned the last piece last night for kindling."
Our morning search failed to turn up a single fan in black and orange.
Things picked up in early afternoon as a California resident, who called herself "Pam," said, "I took the red-eye. I just arrived. Now I have my coffee at Pamela's Diner. I'm set."
Then, we ran into an unlikely pair of pals.
Carmen Gentile was wearing a Pirates' cap, while Keith Druzin chose Giants' headwear.
"I think I might try to sprint out of the stadium a little bit early," the Giants fan admitted.
"I told him, win or lose, we're going to Primanti's afterward," Gentile replied. "But either way, you're taking that hat off."
