Missing Monroeville Man Found Safe
MONROEVILLE (KDKA) -- Authorities say a missing man from Monroeville has been found.
KDKA's Brenda Waters reports that John Bendtsen was found safe today at Biondi Auto Sales in Monroeville.
Police said Bendtsen, who suffers from dementia, was last seen Tuesday morning near his home on Northern Pike. He was reported missing later that evening by his wife.
"Just so glad it's over, they found him – wonderful, wonderful police department and everybody [has] been just so great," Doreen Bendtsen, John's wife, said.
He was found along Route 22 and he doesn't know how he got there, according to his wife.
"If you talked to me yesterday, I probably wouldn't have believed after last night that this would be a happy ending," Monroeville Police Chief Kenneth "Doug" Cole said.
"He had been crossing the road right in front of me and I thought, 'Oh my goodness! That was the guy that was on the TV,'" Patty Woods, of Upper Burrell, said.
She said she turned her car around on Route 22 and spotted him again.
"I said, 'Are you lost?'
"And he said, 'No, I know where my home is. I just don't know how to get there.'
"And so I said, 'I know someplace I can call and you can get home.'
"So I called 911."
Bendtsen was taken to Forbes Regional Hospital to be checked out.
Police say Bendtsen told them he slept under an overpass that leads to the Monroeville Mall.
