2 Corrections Officers Assaulted By Inmate At SCI Greene
FRANKLIN TOWNSHIP (KDKA) -- Two corrections officers were hospitalized after an inmate allegedly stabbed one multiple times and hit another with a "lock in a sock."
Two corrections officers were injured in the incident Friday morning, which prompted a lockdown at SCI Greene in Franklin Township.
"This is the most brutal assault I've seen in 20 years of working inside jails," said John Eckenrode, the western region vice president of the Pennsylvania State Corrections Officers Association.
Eckenrode said the first officer was stabbed multiple times in an assault that lasted over two minutes. Another officer came to help and was hit on the head with a padlock inside a sock.
"They were homemade," Eckenrode said. "One was like an inmate padlock that was tied to a sock or a string of some sort. He mixed up urine and feces in a bottle and actually sprayed the officer with a cocktail, we call it."
The jail is on lockdown and there are currently multiple people searching the jail. The lockdown will last several days.
Both officers were released from the hospital and are expected to be okay.
The inmate is being held in restricted housing and will faces charges.
Eckenrode said this is part of an issue that spans across the state, and many corrections officers don't feel safe at work.
"Their hands are being tied, we feel," Eckenrode said. "They're trying to enforce rules and there's no punishment when the rules are broken."
Eckenrode hopes this latest incident is a call to actions for officials.
