School Dist. Investigating After Girl Beaten Up Near Bus Stop
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – You don't expect to send your child off to school and have her return home with injuries.
"She has a fractured eye socket, fractures to her cheekbones, busted blood vessels in her eye and a fractured sinus cavity," said Shayla Toliver, mother of 13-year-old Woodland Hills Academy student Shamiyah Scott.
Scott is in the eighth grade, but after school Monday, she says she was attacked a few blocks away from her home in East Pittsburgh.
Around 3:10 p.m., Scott says she got off of her school bus at the corner of Main and Maple streets. She says around the same time, a male student got off another bus, approached her, removed her ear buds and told her to get ready.
"I just got hit and I blacked out and I woke up on the ground," she said. "The hits were hard."
When asked if she knew why the boy attacked her, Scott said, "I really don't."
And according to Scott and her mother, some other students who knew the fight was supposed to happen, purposefully got on the wrong bus after school in order to take part, or watch.
"These kids were not supposed to be on that bus," Toliver said.
The superintendent of the Woodland Hills School District says he is aware some students did not board buses they had been assigned. That will be part of the investigation. Alan Johnson says the district will also address if the crossing guard at the scene and the school bus driver neglected to intervene.
"There is an assumption that any adult and anyone who is associated with school children in an capacity will step in and take necessary steps to prevent injury and do whatever they can," said Superintendent Alan Johnson.
UPDATE: Nov. 13: Following the incident police have increased their presence at the corner of Main and Maple Streets.
Meanwhile, a 14-year-old has been charged with assault through juvenile court. She has been suspended until an informal hearing, in which she could face expulsion.
Also, authorities say once police have identified all those involved, summary citations could be issued.
