Sarris Candies Pokes Fun At Patriots With Deflated Chocolate Football
CANONSBURG, Pa. (KDKA/AP) - A Washington County candy maker is having some fun at the expense of Tom 'Bradie' and the New England Patriots.
Bill Sarris had his staff make a "deflated" chocolate football - it has a big dent in the side - and posted a picture on the company's Facebook page.
Named the 'Bradie' ball to avoid any legal issues, the caption on the pic says, "Net weight 13 lbs ... Oops! We meant 11.2 lbs."
"It was crazy. Just to have an idea one morning and come in and say, 'Hey let's try something.' With all the stuff going on in the news with the deflated football, let's see what we can do," Sarris said.
The Patriots and quarterback, Tom Brady, play in the Super Bowl Sunday, having been accused of using underinflated footballs in the AFC Championship game.
Sarris said they have received an incredible reaction from Pittsburgh. However, he also said they've gotten quite a reaction out of Foxborough, Massachusetts.
"In a matter of minutes, we started getting responses and they kept going and coming. A lot of good responses, especially in Pittsburgh because -- you know that rivalry. And of course, some bad ones from Foxborough. Some really nasty ones coming in from there," Sarris said.
Sarris said it took them over four hours to make the football, which is one reason why they aren't making more to sell.
"We started about six in the morning talking about it and it took about 4.5 hours for us to get what we wanted," Sarris said. "We could only make one. After a few flubs, of course, we made a few mistakes."
Sarris: "That's the only way to deflate something is to make it hollow.
KDKA-TV's Rick Dayton: "A little bit less air in this one than what they normally would have?"
Sarris: "Absolutely. About two pounds."
So, has Roger Goodell and the NFL contacted Sarris yet about the latest deflated football?
"No, but he's a W&J graduate and so am I sure we can talk," Sarris said.
However, they will auction off the lone deflated football and the proceeds will be donated to charity.
