Santorum Responds To Close Race In Iowa
PITTSBURGH (NEWSRADIO 1020 KDKA) -- On a shoestring and a prayer, former United States Senator Rick Santorum from Pennsylvania went from the bottom of the Republican candidate heap to almost tying in the Iowa Caucus.
KDKA AM's Larry Richert and John Shumway talk to Santorum live in Iowa for his response as he prepares for New Hampshire.
"It feels great that the people of Iowa responded to a message of, you know, 'Let's build this economy from the bottom up. Let's put everybody back to work, including not just those on Wall Street, but the folks who built this country,' and that's the message I was out talking about," said Santorum.
The former senator also talked about his next move on the campaign trail.
"We're heading to New Hampshire today. You know, we've been planning on that from the very beginning. We've built a great organization up there," he added. "We have a lot of activists who have just been pounding the phone for us for the past few weeks. They had a lot of confidence in us."
Santorum also took some swipes at the man who beat him by just eight votes, Mitt Romney, and the amount of money that the Romney campaign spent versus the amount of money he used to help him gain momentum.
"We raised more money yesterday than we raised in most months of the campaign, so we've got a long way to go, don't get me wrong," he said. "It's amazing, if you look at the amount of money Mitt Romney spent here, when he said he wasn't participating, he spent well over $7 or $8 million between the Super PAC and his own campaign and on the media and I think we spent combined about $300,000 or $400,000. So this gives you an idea, to come within eight votes, that's the way we should run our government, that efficiently."
He added that the money his campaign brought in Tuesday was a milestone, but there's still a huge difference in that department when comes to a comparison to Romney.
"It's been good, it's still a fraction I'm sure of the millions that Mitt Romney has, but we're certainly much better healed. One thing I don't do is I don't spend money I don't have, I don't have debt, none at all," he said. "Believe it or not our campaign spent $30,000 on television here in New Hampshire and came within eight votes of a guy that spent $8 million."
