Same Firefighters Respond To Three Fires In A Single Night
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- Pittsburgh firefighters had a busy night as they tackled three house fires in close proximity to each other.
It all started around 10:30 Friday night when crews were sent to a vacant house fire in the 7900 block of Mediera Street in Homewood. While they were fighting the fire, the road buckled underneath them due to a water main break.
"We were able to move our [truck] to a safe distance," Chief Mark Gasiorowski said.
Then, just a few blocks away in Homewood around 1:55 Saturday morning, a vacant building caught fire in the 7300 block of Kelly Street.
"I saw the fire trucks outside, so I came outside and I saw the smoke," witness David Emmanuel said.
"At one point, we did have fire on the roof extended halfway down," Gasiorowski said at the scene. "Extended to 4 of the 6 units, but we were able to back that up."
Crews had to deal with multiple layers to the roof. One firefighter was treated for smoke inhalation.
"The guyS did an excellent job tonight," Gasiorowski said. "They've been going for about 8 hours straight, and I'm really proud of them."
Then, shortly after 6 this morning, there was a house fire in the 6300 block of Dean Street in Larimer.
"It looked like a disaster. I thought my house was on fire too. I feel for my neighbors," neighbor Robert Hill said as crews put out the flames.
According to fire crews, everyone was out of the home by the time they got there. Two people were treated for smoke inhalation.
Firefighters prevented flames from spreading to Hill's house. He only had some siding damage.
"It doesn't look like it made it to the wood or anything, so I might be fine," Hill said.
For some firefighters, this was their fourth fire since Friday evening since some were called to one at the corner of Lincoln Avenue and Enterprise Street.
"There's going to be a lot of sleepy guys tomorrow," Gasiorowski said.
All three house fires are under investigation.
