Runners Participate In First GNC Live Well Liberty Mile Race
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- Downtown Pittsburgh quickly made the transition from corporate Pittsburgh to race course shortly after 6 p.m. Friday as the city launched its first GNC Live Well Liberty Mile Race.
"Everything starts with a mile and today it's going to finish with a mile so we're just looking at it's achievable for all ranges of skill, ages and ability," Patrice Matamoros, race director, said.
Race organizers seemed to have a plan and the plan seemed to work, but downtown commuters and some businesses were caught off guard by the new event.
"I come out here to catch the 1 Freeport back to Millvale and I find all this and I don't know where to catch the bus to go home," Arnella Carter said.
"I didn't know what was going on," Tina Crawford said. "Nobody told us anything. People were asking us if the buses were running and I didn't know that."
But aside from a bit of the element of surprise, the race appeared to be a big success for runners who fulfilled their dreams, those who overcame personal challenges like running for the first time after a brain tumor or those who were just pushed to do something different.
"Finishing felt very accomplished because I did it," Christina Schuliger said.
