Runaway Truck Hits Several Vehicles, Two School Buses
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – Police responded to an accident involving several vehicles, including two school buses, in the West End Friday morning.
Around 7:30 a.m., a truck collided into nine vehicles, including the buses, near Greentree Road and Woodville Avenue.
One school bus was not carrying any children, only a driver who was ejected from the vehicle. The other school bus had only one child and a care taker. The child was taken to Children's Hospital.
"That child is fine," Cmdr. Scott Schubert of the Pittsburgh Police said.
The two school buses were from West Allegheny School District and the Pittsburgh School District.
A man was also ejected from his car during the crash. He and the bus driver were taken to Allegheny General Hospital.
The two adults are said to be in serious condition.
The intersection is lined with smashed cars and wrecked vehicles, all hit by the runaway truck, which ultimately crashed into a house on Mcknight Street. Officials are checking to make sure the house is still structurally sound.
"He (the driver) was going so fast that when he came, it was like a big boom," said Linda Witherspoon, who owns the house that was struck by the truck. "Even when he hit the school bus, it was like a big boom, boom, boom. He was so short, but he was trying, he was trying to turn, but he couldn't."
A side of the house was torn off. The Red Cross will be assisting the family with food and shelter.
Pittsburgh Police say the crash was a nightmare scenario, but it could have been much worse.
Authorities say the driver of the truck is a Cuban national man who could not provide a driver's license and spoke broken English. They are bringing in a translator.
Parkway Center Drive is blocked off and will be for a while, according to authorities.
"The roadways will be shut down for quite a while," Schubert said. "There's a lot we have to do and we'll be talking to the truck driver who was coming down Greentree Road when this crash occurred."
