Route 19 Construction Nearly Complete
WEXFORD FLATS (KDKA) - The 2.3 mile reconstruction of Route 19 in the Wexford Flats area is now about 90-percent finished.
It's been eight years in the making, and the road was officially dedicated on Monday.
State Representative Mike Turzai said the improvement was badly needed because "the road simply couldn't handle the amount of traffic it saw everyday."
About 28,000 vehicles use that section of roadway every day, and almost 400 accidents were reported on the stretch in recent years, including two fatalities.
Widening takes the road from four lanes to five, with dedicated turn lanes throughout the project.
Some sidewalk and driveway work still must be finished, but the project should be complete by next spring.
