Man Dies After Being Struck By SUV, Pinned Between 2 Vehicles In Ross Twp.
ROSS TOWNSHIP (KDKA) -- A man died Tuesday after being hit by an SUV and then pinned between that vehicle and his own car in Ross Township.
According to emergency dispatchers, the accident happened just before 3 p.m. at the intersection of Hillendale and Rochester Roads.
Police the victim was standing by his car, which was parked on the street, when an SUV struck him, pinning him between the two vehicles.
"The individual in the Buick was traveling up the hill. The person that was struck by the car was standing on the street near his vehicle in front his home," said Ross Township Police Sgt. Ben Dripps.
The man was taken to Allegheny General Hospital in serious condition, but later died from his injuries. The Allegheny County Medical Examiner's Office identifies the man as 77-year-old William Hollis.
Police don't believe alcohol, drugs or speed caused the crash. They say the driver was distraught.
"I think that comes from both being in the accident, as well as having her grandson in the car," said Sgt. Dripps. "I think it was nothing short of a traumatic event for her as well."
This was the third major accident to happen on Hillendale Road.
In Feb. 2009, 12-year-old Jacob Snively died when the car he was riding in was hit by pickup truck that lost it brakes coming down Hillendale at Rochester Road.
In 2010, a woman who also lived on Hillendale Road was severely injured by a hit-and-run driver while checking her mailbox. The driver was eventually arrested.
Neighbor Michele Roberts says a number of parked cars have been hit on Hillendale Road, too. She wants drivers to slow down.
"My husband, when he cuts the grass, he puts the car out on the street so that you can at least get to the curb and turn the lawn mower around, you can's step out in the street," Roberts said. " If you go to get your mail out of your mailbox, you feel like a little kid, you have to look both ways to see. People fly up and down this hill."
