Roethlisberger Relishes Creative Control
PITTSBURGH (93-7 THE FAN) -- When you're 30 years old, won two Super Bowls, and reached a third, you'll have the trust of your coaches, and Ben Roethlisberger says freedom goes a long way toward balance under new offensive coordinator Todd Haley.
"We were in the no-huddle most of the first half, and the end of the second half. I was calling a lot of the runs," the Steelers' quarterback told the gathered media, including 93.7 The Fan's Joe Starkey, on the South Side. "We broke down [our play selection], runs versus passes, and it was pretty balanced. Our no-huddle menu is wide open."
Big Ben, who noted the Steelers (0-1) often use three-receiver sets in their no-huddle attack, told Starkey he believes a healthy mix of quick and deliberate play-calling is what's best for the offense as they get ready to host the New York Jets (1-0) at Heinz Field Sunday.
"There's plays not in the no-huddle that you've got to have...whether it's certain play-action plays, short-yardage plays, trick plays, things like that," Roethlisberger said. "We can have a good balance doing it."
He also talked about how he has previously game-planned for the Jets' vaunted secondary, featuring All-Pro defensive back Darrelle Revis, who has not practiced and remains questionable due to a Week 1 concussion:
