Roethlisberger: I Want Someone Who Can Help Us Get Better
PITTSBURGH (93-7 the Fan) The NFL Draft begins at 8 p.m. on Thursday and all eyes will be on who the Steelers may take with the No. 15 pick.
Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger said he may take a peek and if he has a wish list for the draft, he is not sharing it when he joined "The Cook and Poni Show" today.
"Whatever the high powers decide can help this team is what I am going for," Roethlisberger said. "Anything to help the team, 8-8 is not good enough. We have to get back to winning Super Bowls."
Roethlisberger admits that he may have an eye on the ticker to see who is taken, but he will also rely on his agent to inform him.
"I can't wait for it to finally be over with and be excited to finally figure out our new teammates and move on," Roethlisberger said.
He knows what the young quarterbacks waiting to get drafted are going to go through.
""I remembered all of the questions and uncertainties," Roethlisberger said. "You just have to sit there and wait."
He also remembered his draft night saying that he thought he was going to the New York Giants and never thought Pittsburgh was in the mix.
Ben tells the guys that he thinks Blake Bortles may end up being the best quarterback in this class because he shows the leadership and the arm. He thinks Johnny Manziel has jaw-dropping talent, but is not sure if his abilities will translate to the NFL.
"He has so much upside, but we will have to see," Roethlisberger said. "He will be a star at first because he will use his atheism, but it's not about the first year. It's about the second, third and fourth years."
Ben told the guys it was tough to lose two of his weapons in the off season in Emmanuel Sanders and Jerricho Cotchery.
"You hate to lose anybody. It's like family," Roethlisberger said. "You are never going to have the same team. You just wish them the best."
Roethlisberger said he expected that Sanders was going to move on, but he really thought Cotchery would be back.
Ben tells the guys that he was back at work today taking snaps from Maurkice Pouncey and working back into some of the verbiage of the no-huddle offense. Although the no-huddle has always been a part of the offense, he thinks they need to make it a bigger part.
"In the past, we have always had the no-huddle, but it was on the back burner. It was used to change the pace," Roethlisberger said. "I hope we can all agree that maybe it needs to be more involved in the offense. Maybe more of a base offense. To use it more often makes us feel more confident in it and makes us better."
Ben says that there have been talks in regards to him signing an extension with the Steelers, but there is nothing imminent. Will it happen before the season starts?
"Always a chance," Roethlisberger said. "I don't know how realistic it is because they have so many other needs."
Roethlisberger said the talks have happened, but nothing has been serious enough to be brought to his attention. He tells the guys his hope is to get a deal done to stay here and he feels great and thinks there is still some life left in his arms and legs.
"I could get five, six or seven more years out of these arms and legs," Roethlisberger said. "This is home for me and where I want to finish. I bleed Black and Gold."
