Rob Neyer: Umpire Jerry Meals 'May Have Made Right Call'
PITTSBURGH (SportsRadio 93-7 The FAN) -- Rob Neyer of SB Nation joined Seibel, Starkey, and Miller to talk about the epic call at the plate in 19 innings last night between the Pirates and Braves.
Neyer said the call was not 100 percent clear and although replay suggests umpire Jerry Meals made the wrong call, there is not a conclusive camera angle showing the tag took place.
Neyer added there are hundreds of calls made that are 100 percent wrong with evidence to back them up, but that's not the case with this play at home. He said perhaps Meals judgment was clouded because of the fact he was standing behind home for more than six hours.
Neyer talked a lot about "seeing daylight" between glove and uniform then said if Jerry Meals saw "such daylight," he had to call Julio Lugo safe. He went on to say umpires should not simply assume calls, rather they need to continue making calls based upon what they see.
Neyer ended the conversation by saying this was not the worst call ever made, but it will go down as one of the most infamous calls ever made.
