Residents Drying Out After Flash Flooding In Bridgeville, Other Areas
BRIDGEVILLE (KDKA) -- As homeowners continue to dry out after Tuesday night's storms caused flash flooding in parts of the area, they are hoping that we don't get more rain tonight.
Many residents are cleaning up the wet, muddy mess at their homes.
With a pump working overtime, slowly the water was leaving James Mehlmauer's basement in Bridgeville.
He started seeing it coming in around 9 p.m. Tuesday.
"It slowly kept creeping up, got scared because of the water down there," said Mehlmauer. "I was worried about last year when it came up and got all the way under the door.
KDKA's John Shumway: "How bad did it get last night?"
Mehlmauer: "It got, I'm going to say it came up to my knee in the basement."
But unlike last July, this time McCaughlin Run was well within its banks and the problem was backing into the home from the sewers.
With the iron manhole cover bobbing to the rhythm of the water, Todd Bradley says they knew their basements were in trouble.
"They lined the sewers with plastic thinking that would solve the problem, but it's actually gotten worse than that," said Bradley, another Bridgeville resident.
The borough sent in a restoration service when the basements flooded a few weeks ago. Residents are being told the borough is trying to figure out what's wrong.
Meanwhile, on Mayview Road in Upper St. Clair, you can still see the remnants of where the angry creek inundated the street.
Fortunately, the flood waters stopped short of the Pati Petite Cookies business where the production floor inside is actually built several feet above the road.
During the storms on Wednesday evening, there was a transformer fire in Washington, Pa., after lightning struck a power pole near the Meadows Casino. It happened near the Marathon Gas Station along Racetrack Road.
As for power restoration around the area, at 4:30 p.m., Duquesne Light was reporting about 200 customers still without service. They expected to have everyone restored by 8 p.m. tonight.
