Report: St. Louis Cardinals Being Investigated By FBI For Hacking Houston Astros
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – According to a new report, the FBI and Justice Department are investigating officials of the St. Louis Cardinals for hacking internal networks of a rival team.
The New York Times reports officials may have hacked the network of the Houston Astros to steal closely guarded information about player personnel.
Investigators say the database had discussions about trades, proprietary statistics, and scouting reports.
The Cardinals are one of the most successful teams in baseball over the past two decades.
The Cardinals officials under investigation have not been put on leave, suspended or fired according to the report.
The team has the best record in baseball this season (42-21).
The Pittsburgh Pirates are six games back of the Cardinals.
"We don't know anything, so… and I'm not a big guy on throwing my opinions around here until all the facts are in… See how it plays out. I don't need to be out first with opinions and thoughts," said Pirates Manager Clint Hurdle.
"It's not something you would ever expect," said Pirates pitcher Jared Hughes. "Honestly, it's the first time I've ever heard of anything like that happening. Hopefully, it's just one instance where it's remote and this type of thing doesn't happen very often."
You might remember, internal trade talks between the Pirates and Astros were leaked last June.
Those included conversations between GM Neal Huntington and the Astros front office.
