Report: Pittsburgh Pirates sign Aroldis Chapman
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) — The Pittsburgh Pirates have reportedly agreed to terms on a contract with pitcher Aroldis Chapman.
Multiple MLB insiders are reporting on Monday that the left-handed relief pitcher is coming to Pittsburgh. Jason Mackey from our news partner at the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports Chapman will sign a one-year, $10.5 million deal. The contract is pending a physical, Mackey reports.
The 35-year-old Chapman is a seven-time All-Star who spent time last season with both the Kansas City Royals and Texas Rangers. He had a 3.09 ERA over 58 1/3 innings in 61 games last season. Champman last made an All-Star team in 2021 when he was with the New York Yankees.
Chapman spent last season mostly in a setup role, only tallying six saves. He had nine saves the previous season.
Coming into the offseason, CBS Sports ranked Chapman as the No. 40 available free agent, saying, in part, "he showed up with his hardest fastball in years and authored his best season since 2019. He's still a little too prone to handing out free passes, but someone will trust him with a high-leverage role.
Chapman won a World Series title with the Rangers last season. He threw 10 pitchers, tallying two outs in Texas' World Series-clinching win over the Arizona Diamondbacks. He did not allow a hit or run.
Pirates fans may be familiar with Chapman from his time in Cincinnati. He spent the first six seasons of his career with the Reds.
