Dave Wannstedt Resigns As Head Coach
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- After six years, Dave Wannstedt is no longer the head football coach with the University of Pittsburgh.
Wannstedt will remain as Special Assistant to the Athletic Director.
"The past six years have been among the most gratifying of my entire career," Wannstedt said in a press release. "To be the head coach at my university was the realization of a lifelong dream. It has been an honor and privilege to serve Pitt and its football program."
Athletic director Steve Pederson said he sat down with Wannstedt and determined this was the right time for his resignation.
Wannstedt was emotional as the team gathered around him and he left with the team.
The Panthers finished with a 7-5 season and got an invitation to the BBVA Compass Bowl Jan. 8. It is Wannstedt's choice as to whether he will coach that game.
The team did not get a BCS berth during Wannstedt's tenure.
