Report: Diamondbacks Retaliation Unacceptable

PITTSBURGH (93-7 The FAN) - After watching Andrew McCutchen take a fastball right off his spine Saturday night against the Arizona Diamondbacks, there was a certain level of outrage among his teammates.

That outrage was put into words as CBSSports.com's Gregg Doyel tackled the topic saying what Manager Kirk Gibson and his team did was an unacceptable risk.

Doyel looks back at what started all of this in the Diamondbacks eyes, Pirates reliever Ernesto Frieri plunking the Diamondbacks star first baseman Paul Goldschmidt, a pitch that ended Goldschmidt's season.  The old school "unwritten rules of baseball" dictate that the Diamondbacks respond by hitting the Pirates best player.

This is what Doyel really takes issue with saying that this way of thinking is luckily shrinking because people in baseball are getting smarter and realizing that a 95 mph fastball isn't retaliation, it's a dangerous weapon.

Doyel goes on to talk about the "meathead" mentality that leads to these type of plays and why they need to stop.
