Relief Pitcher Hughes Returns To Pirates
PITTSBURGH (93-7 THE FAN) -- The Pirates have recalled right-handed relief pitcher Jared Hughes from his rehab assignment in Triple-A Indianapolis and reinstated him from the 15-day disabled list, the team announced Friday afternoon.
Hughes will trade places in the Bucs' bullpen--and on their 25-man roster--with fellow righty Vic Black.
The 25-year-old Black tossed just four relief innings in a Pirate uniform before returning to Indy. He allowed six hits, two earned runs, struck out three, and walked two.
In 29 appearances with the Indians this year, Black has posted a 2.31 ERA, a 0.94 WHIP, and 15 saves in 35 innings of work, allowing just nine earned runs and 13 walks against 51 K's.
Hughes, 28, has chiefly spent the 2013 minor-league season with Indianapolis, where he has posted a 0.43 ERA and 1.14 WHIP in 18 appearances. He has struck out 18, walked seven, and allowed only one earned run in 21 full innings.
He began this year with the Pirates, where he struggled with a 4.96 ERA through 16 1/3 innings, striking out 14 and walking ten before being sidelined with right shoulder inflammation June 6.
The Pirates (65-43) open a weekend series with the visiting Colorado Rockies (51-59) that gets underway at 7:05 Friday. "Pirates Preview" with Dan Zangrilli and Kevin Orie begins our coverage at 5:40 on SportsRadio 93.7 The Fan, your flagship home of Pirates baseball.
