Record Crowd Shows Up For U.S. Women's Soccer Match Vs. Costa Rica
HEINZ FIELD (KDKA)- A record crowd showed up to cheer on the U.S. Women's Soccer team at Heinz Field on Sunday.
And the U.S. team didn't disappoint the crowd, scoring eight goals, including a goal by Pine-Richland graduate Meghan Klingenberg.
"I was like, if I score, I'm running over there," said Kingenberg. "I don't know if you saw, but I elbowed [Abby Wambach] out of the way to get to that Terrible Towel. So, it was pretty special."
This was only Klingenberg's third goal as a member of the U.S. Women's Soccer team. As a defender, goals don't come often.
This is the first time the U.S. Women's Soccer team has played together since winning the World Cup title back in early July. They had no problem beating Costa Rica, cruising to an 8-0 win.
The just over 44,000 people at Heinz Field on Sunday was the largest crowd ever at a U.S. Women's team friendly. The previous record was set at Busch Stadium in April with a crowd of 35,817.
"The visual I have of this stadium is snow and big men coming down in short sleeves, covered in snow," said U.S. Women's Soccer team head coach Jill Ellis. "So, going out in the heat kind of surprised me."
This was the first stop in a ten-city tour for the soccer team. The next game is on Wednesday in Chattanooga, Tennessee against Costa Rica again.
