Ray Searage: 'Jason's Gonna Be Alright. He's Gonna Persevere'
PITTSBURGH (93-7 The Fan) -- Pirates pitching coach Ray Searage joined The Fan Morning Show on Thursday to talk about his staff's recent performance.
Searage felt that Francisco Lirano got sharper as Wednesday night's game (a 4-2 win over the Nationals) went on, noting how many three-ball counts there were early on for Liriano.
Though he isn't sure when Jason Grilli will return, he's told Grilli that he's confident in the veteran's ability to bounce back.
"I said, 'Hey, Jason, just think about all the stuff you have been through - you're gonna get through this,'" Searage said. "Jason's gonna be alright. He gonna persevere. This guy, he was one of the main cogs with us when he was pitching. He still will be when he comes back."
He's been encouraged by the direction that Gerrit Cole is heading in.
"He is still learning about himself and still developing a consistent delivery, so we have to stay on him like a cheap suit," Searage said. "He's a smart kid. He's just got to make sure he doesn't get too smart."
