Rally Planned Over Fayette Co. Prison Vote
FAYETTE COUNTY (KDKA) - Last month, Fayette County commissioners elected to build a new $30 million prison. It's a decision residents are still angry about.
Those who are opposed to building a new prison have planned a rally for Tuesday morning. They are hoping to present signatures to the county in the hopes of getting the issue on an upcoming ballot.
The current prison is 125-years-old, overcrowded, falling apart and is not up to state standards.
Commissioners voted 2-1 to build a new facility near the Fayette County Fairgrounds after a study last year showed that the option would be more cost effective than renovating the current prison.
However, not everyone agrees with that decision.
"It's not a matter of we don't want a prison. I think we all know we need a prison. But again, we are being locked out. This is a one-sided deal," Terry Kris said.
The group that has planned the rally claims to have 2,000 signatures supporting their point of view.
The rally is planned for 11 a.m.
