Much Of Area To Get 3 To 6 Inches As Winter Storm Moves In
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- Warnings and advisories are in effect across the region as another round of winter weather moves through the area, and it could make for a tough Wednesday morning commute.
According to KDKA Chief Meteorologist Jeff Verszyla, the precipitation will change over to wet snow overnight and the accumulating snow will end before noon Wednesday.
"Here's what we expect as we head toward wake up [Wednesday] morning, snow to start the day but it should shut off pretty quickly," said Verszyla. "The accumulating snow is going to end before lunchtime - just some lingering flurries - 35 [degrees], and mostly cloudy, and 37 for the late-day high."
A Winter Storm Warning has been issued for Allegheny, Cambria, Greene, Somerset and Washington counties, as well as the Fayette and Westmoreland Ridges.
A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect for Armstrong, Beaver, Butler and Indiana counties.
In West Virginia - Brooke, Hancock, Marshall, Monongalia, Ohio and Preston counties are also under a Winter Storm Warning; as well as Garrett County in Maryland.
"There will be a very sharp cut off line to where this snow is and where it is not, and right now that line could be right along or near Route 422," said Verszyla. "So, north of that line, you're probably going to see an inch or less of accumulation while most of what we'll see will be from about Allegheny County on south, especially down in through northern West Virginia. And Garrett County, Md., could do very well with snowfall accumulations."
Verszyla says the snow will be of the heavy, wet variety.
"Here's what I expect in terms of accumulation. This is from midnight until noon [Wednesday]. A total of 12-hour window of opportunity to pick up accumulation," he said. "[A] three to six inch swatch across most of the area, a little less north, an inch or two especially as you get near I-80 and six to 10 across the ridge tops and down in through northern West Virginia."
As for Wednesday night, Verszyla says it will be mostly cloudy and cold with a low of 26 degrees.
The good news, Verszyla says it shouldn't take long for the snow to melt with temperatures in the upper-30s on Wednesday and Thursday and 40 degrees on Friday.
As for the weekend, temperatures are expected to continue to rise with a high of 45 on Saturday and 54 degrees on Sunday.
