Pyrofest Coming To Hartwood Acres Over Memorial Day Weekend

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- Memorial Day is just around the corner. If you're looking for a way to celebrate, you may want to head to Hartwood Acres.

An action-packed fireworks festival, called Pyrofest, will be held. It's the first of its kind there as more than $350,000 worth of fireworks will be set off.

The day-long event is being put on by New Castle-based company, Pyrotechnico.

There will be at least seven different themed firework displays. One of the biggest is called "Voyage Through the Universe."

"It's a four song, rock-slash opera," says Derek Weber, of Pyrotechnico. "But it's about a voyage through the universe where really you are lifting off, you are going through space, you are coming back to earth."

The opening display, which is during daylight hours, will be a salute to the military and will feature colored smoke fireworks and lots of sound.

"It's going to be noise you haven't heard before, so people miles away are going to hear that noise to open up the event," Weber added.

Besides all the action in the sky, there will be food, a kid's zone and live music.

The two headliners will be acts with Pittsburgh ties, B.E. Taylor and The Gathering Field.

If all goes well, the folks at Pyrotecnico hope to take the show on the road.

"Pittsburgh is our hometown," said Stephen Vitale, the CEO of Pyrotechnico. "We are all born and raised here, so we want to make sure we get it right first here and do it really well."

The event is May 26 at Hartwood Acres. The gates open at 3 p.m. Tickets cost $18 for adults, $10 for kids and children under 6 are free.
