PSU Branch Campuses Pay Tribute To Paterno

NEW KENSINGTON (KDKA) - While thousands of people flocked to Penn State's campus to pay their respects to Joe Paterno, other events were being held at branch campuses in honor of the legendary coach.

Locally, people gathered on the campus of Penn State New Kensington for a vigil to honor Paterno Tuesday night.

People gathered around the Nittany Lion Shrine and it was clear that people associated with Penn State are one big family.

Students, alumni and Paterno admirers braved the cold to remember him.

"JoePa meant a lot to this university as a whole and I think it means a lot ot us all, each campus, to come together at this time and show our respect to him," Ashley Laird said.

"We've lost such a great hero, someone who means so much to our university. We're a family like everyone says, we are Penn State. Joe was the best example of that," Myquan Harris-Moore said.

"its really sad especially with the events over the past couple of months, a lot of people are not remembering the guy that he was for the past 61 years for Penn State University," Vera Spina said.

The group lit candles and shared stories of their encounters with Paterno.

"Joe as a person on campus was amazing. Every time you saw him, he was friendly. He was phenomenal to talk to," John Spadaro said.

Flags on the campus are at half-staff in honor of Paterno.
