Protestors Head To Washington, D.C. For Healthcare Rally
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) - Residents from our area are vowing to fight President Barack Obama's healthcare law.
They are planning to rally in Washington, D.C. as the Supreme Court takes part in another day of hearings on the subject.
It's an issue that some from our area are very passionate about. So, this morning, they left their cars behind and boarded a bus to Washington, D.C. to rally against the healthcare mandate.
The sun was barely coming up, as nearly 100 people against the Affordable Care Act boarded two buses at Ross Town Center on McKnight Road.
"We've been against really any kind of nationalization of our healthcare program," Patti Weaver said.
A total of 16 buses across the state were members of the Americans For Prosperity-Pennsylvania. Some of the passengers on the bus are Tea Party members and other Republicans.
Protests have been ongoing while the Supreme Court hears arguments on the constitutionality of the mandate requiring all Americans to have health insurance or face a fine.
"That's why we're here. To try to make people see that this healthcare bill is not the specific bill that this country needs," Donna Scala said.
In a recent poll done by CBS News and the New York Times, 47 percent of those surveyed disagreed with the Affordable Care Act while only 36 percent somewhat or strongly supported it.
Still, strong supporters exist and the Pennsylvania Health Access Network is one of them.
"If the Affordable Care Act is repealed, millions of Pennsylvanians will lose important protections. We will go back to the days when insurance companies could discriminate against people with pre-existing conditions, charge women more, and cut your coverage when you get sick. We are confident that the law is constitutional," the Pennsylvania Health Access Network said in a statement.
Buses will not be provided on Wednesday. However, some people will be driving themselves back to Washington, D.C. to be there for the third day of the hearing.
