PITTSBURGH (93-7 THE FAN) -- One day after former Steelers running back Willie Parker told The Fan Morning Show that the Redskins don't care about football, former Redskins linebacker Lavar Arrington said he understands Parker's comments and he issued a challenge to disgruntled fans.
The Pro Bowl linebacker, who now hosts a radio show on the Fan's sister station in Washington, D.C., joined The Fan Morning Show Thursday to talk about some of Parker's statements about his former team.
"Being in Washington, they just don't -- they don't care about football," Parker told 93-7 The Fan on Wednesday. Parker went on to say that he "didn't feel good from Day One there" and that players were too interested in partying. (Full Story: Listen To Parker's Complete Interview)
Addressing the controversial remarks today, Arrington told The Fan Morning Show: "I think it was a generalization by Willie Parker, but I certainly could understand where his mindset was about it."
Arrington said that during his time with the Redskins, he, too, was concerned "that some of the guys were partying too much."
"As far as the players," Arrington added, "you're always gonna have some guys that just aren't professional. When I played for the Washington Redskins under Steve Spurrier, if we had more professionals, Steve Spurrier would have been more successful, I probably would have had three or four more Pro Bowls under my belt, and who knows what we may have done… so I get it. I have to admit that I do get it."
The former Penn State LB added that that support from the Steelers Nation is hard to match. "There's not very many franchises -- if any -- that compares to how loyal and how into it the Pittsburgh Steeler fan base -- you know , how they are."
Arrington went on to issue a challenge to Redskins fans offended by Parker's comments. "If you're upset about what he said, and you think that he's inaccurate, I challenge you: Take the drive from here -- it's three and a half, four-hour drive; take the drive. You might not even need to go into the stadium. Just see how they are outside of the stadium!"
Listen to Lavar Arrington's complete interview in which he also chatted about the Washington Capitals recent elimination from the NHL Playoffs and his election into the WPIAL Hall Of Fame.
