Preview The Steel City Police Motor Skills Competition
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- This is the second year Pittsburgh is hosting the Steel City Police Motor Skills Competition.
And KDKA got a sneak peak of the practice and planning going in to the big event.
It's a rodeo of metal and leather.
"On a motorcycle, we can get places that a car can't and we can get there much quicker," said Pittsburgh Police Sgt. Terry Donnelly with Steel City Police Motor Unit.
In a week, motor officers from Pennsylvania, Virginia, Ohio, South Carolina and even Canada will come to Pittsburgh to put their skills to the test.
"The cone courses are set up to depict what a motor officer may encounter in their normal tour of duty," Donnelly said.
Steel City Police Motor Skills organized a competition in 2011 and Pittsburgh is hosting the event yet again this year. Experienced officers will be corralled through 10 courses in the South Side and judged on speed and how clean they make it through. But the toughest part of the contest is:
"Probably riding in tight confined spaces while everyone is watching," Donnelly says.
Donnelly is one of the organizers. A few courses were set up Friday to show up a bit of what we'll see next week. While the event is free, they've been raising money and they'll have an auction, raising money for a good cause.
"We decided to do Special Olympics of Allegheny County," he said. "We want to keep that money here to help people in our community benefit. And there's no better organization than Special Olympics."
The event will run three days, from Thursday, June 27 through Saturday, June 29. But you'll want to make it down Saturday-- that's when the main show, the big competition will be held.
