Preseason: Pens Top Kings, 3-2 In Shootout
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KDKA/AP) -- The Penguins continued their preseason success, beating the Los Angeles Kings, 3-2 in a shootout.
Matt Niskanen scored in the eighth round of the shootout for the win.
The Kings took a 1-0 lead in the first when Jarret Stoll scored off assists from Alec Martinez and Dustin Brown.
In the third period, the Penguins stormed back to take a 2-1 lead with goals by Deryk Engelland and Chris Kunitz.
Then, Martinez tied it with a power play goal at 13:43 in the third.
The score would remain unchanged and the game required a shootout to determine a winner.
Evgeni Malkin deked Jonathan Bernier to the left in the first round of the shootout, but Jarret Stoll kept the Kings alive when he snapped a wrister past Marc-Andre Fleury.
Niskanen's goal in the eighth round proved to be the difference in the game.
Bernier finished with 39 saves and Fleury had 19.
The game was the Sprint Center's only professional game this year as the NBA canceled the Oct. 15 matchup between the Miami Heat and Houston Rockets because of the lockout.
