Preseason: Pens Defeat Blackhawks, 4-2
CHICAGO (KDKA/AP) -- The Penguins beat the Chicago Blackhawks, 4-2 in their last weekend of preseason play.
Steve Sullivan's power play goal at 16:25 in the first gave the Pens a 1-0 lead. Sullivan, who signed with Pittsburgh as a free agent and was nursing a groin injury during training camp, also had an assist in his preseason debut.
Matt Cooke's shorthanded goal and a backhander from Joe Vitale put the Pens up 3-0 until Brandon Pirri got a wrister past Brent Johnson in the second.
Pirri then got a backhander midway through the third to make it 3-2, but Evgeni Malkin's empty netter with less than a minute left gave the Pens the win.
Brent Johnson stopped 35 shots for the Penguins (5-0-0).
Ray Emery's clearing pass set up a short-handed goal by Cooke at 7:19 of the second. Emery came far out of the net to fire the puck away from onrushing Penguins forward Pascal Dupuis, and banked it off the boards to center ice.
The puck landed on Cooke's stick and he fired it from the red line into an empty net before Emery could get back.
