Preseason: Pens Beat Red Wings, 3-2
PITTSBURGH (KDKA/AP) -- Making his first game appearance since suffering a season-ending injury in February, Evgeni Malkin picked up a goal and an assist as the Penguins beat the Detroit Red Wings, 3-2 on Wednesday night for their preseason opener.
Malkin assisted on Chris Kunitz's goal at 11:40 in the first period. The Red Wings came back and tied it at about 2:14 seconds later with a goal from Niklas Kronwall.
Malkin then scored a goal set up by defensemen Carl Sneep and Paul Martin in the second. The Pens took a 3-1 lead on Matt Niskanen's slap shot goal during the power play.
Jiri Hurdler's tip-in at 2:32 in the third made it 3-2.
Marc-Andre Fleury and Brad Thiessen each had 15 saves.
Sidney Crosby has not been cleared for contact workouts due to a concussion.
Jordan Staal and Brooks Orpik did not play for Pittsburgh, while Nicklas Lidstrom and Henrik Zetterberg didn't dress for Detroit.
