Pittsburgh Public Schools Host Back To School Event Providing Students With Supplies
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- Pittsburgh Public School families showed up right outside of Heinz Field Friday morning for a "Back to School" event to get their kids ready for the upcoming school year.
Volunteers spent hours getting ready for the event, and families were seen waiting in line since 7 a.m.
"We've stood in the heat. Very hot heat waiting to get in the event the one year so we learned not to wait," said Tammy Smith.
Some of the items included book bags, masks, hand sanitizers and there was even free food.
This is the 8th year for this event. Superintendent Anthony Hamlet expects this year to be bigger because of the pandemic.
Those involved in making this happen include PNC, Pirates, Penguins and the Steelers.
412 Food Rescue also part of it.
They handed out thousands of boxes of fresh produce to families.
Due to the coronavirus, there was a much different feel to the event this year, as it was drive-up only.
"Normally we would have one of these at our school sites but we're doing them kind of virtually. Out in the open, why? Because of the pandemic we're currently in. So we came up with the concept, grab and go," said Dr. Anthony Hamlet, Pittsburgh Public Schools Superintendent.
This event is from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
