Powerless Tenants Left In Dark By Bethel Park Landlord
BETHEL PARK (KDKA) - People living at an apartment complex in Bethel Park spent the weekend without power, and frustrated by their landlord's slow response to the situation.
No lights, no air conditioning, no refrigeration. That's what many residents at Village Apartments had been dealing with since power went out Friday.
They say management and the landlord could have done more to address the situation.
Landscapers were on site early Monday morning clearing away the remainder of tree that toppled over at Village Apartments on Friday, which knocked out power to four buildings.
As of Monday morning, there was still no power.
"I've called five times and all I get is an answering service. I even left a message for management, Nexus Real Estate. Nobody's called back," resident Amy Lowe said.
Lowe is one of many residents who say their hands were tied.
"I know the one guy paid $150 for a hotel. We don't have that kind of money. I think that's what they should've done. They should've helped us, given us hotel vouchers or something," Lowe said.
"Duquesne Light did their job. We are waiting on the landlord and Nexus Real Estate's electrician to come out and do what they have to do to hook it up and the inspector has to inspect everything to get it turned back on," resident Jeffrey Kountz said.
KDKA's Amy Wadas stopped at Nexus Real Estate's office on West Liberty Avenue Monday morning. The operations manager gave her copy of a letter they say they sent out to residents Saturday, stating that the company is at the mercy of Duquesne Light and the local inspector.
A short time later, both the electrician and inspector were at Village Apartments working to get equipment on the building repaired so Duquesne Light could power things back up.
Residents say it's a little too late.
"All our food is bad. They said there's nothing they can do about that," Kountz said.
By noon Monday, Duquesne Light crews were back at the apartment building now and planned on having power restored by early afternoon.
