Power Outage Leaves Some East Pittsburgh Residents Without Heat
EAST PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- Power was knocked out Tuesday night for about two and a half hours in the Prospect Terrace housing development in East Pittsburgh, leaving residents to deal with the extreme cold without heat.
The units are operated by the Allegheny County Housing Authority.
Tenants said the lights went out around 6 p.m., and they didn't come back on again until about 8:30 p.m.
"There's people up here now that have no heat at all on and are using little, tiny heaters that the office gave them," said Nicole Howe, a resident. "One tiny heater and it's ridiculous."
Adanda Thomas took her two children and new pit bull puppy to her father's home.
"I'm happy I got family close by to where they can come and pick us up, 'cause if we didn't, I don't know what we would do," said Thomas. "I got a 2-year-old and a 4-year-old."
Police helped set up a temporary warming shelter in the community center as crews tried to figure out what caused the outage.
Housing Authority Police said Duquesne Light crews blamed the outage on an equipment failure in a utility pole.
Police were going from one unit to another late Tuesday, making certain that people had electricity again, and that they had heat.
