Popular Amish Business Destroyed By Fire In New Wilmington

NEW WILMINGTON (KDKA) -- Neighbors are rallying together after a fast-moving fire destroyed a popular Amish business early Friday morning in Lawrence County.

The saw-mill, which belonged to the Byler family of New Wilmington, was completely destroyed.

According to witnesses, dogs alerted the residents about the fire.

"They said they heard the dogs barking around four o'clock this morning and that's when the fire started," said Tom McGregor, of Prospect.

Fueled by lumber stock, the blaze burned for more than four hours.

Even before all of the hot spots were out, the Amish community and their friends were pulling together to help cleanup and rebuild.

"Everyone shows up to throw in a hand and help," said McGregor, who was chipping in to help the fire victims. "They'll have it torn down and cleaned up, and a new one up here in no time. They'll be cutting wood here in no time."

Investigators say the cause will remain undetermined because there was so little left to investigate.

The damage is estimated at $100,000.
