Police: Woman Fights Off Uber Driver's Sexual Advances
ROSS TOWNSHIP (KDKA) – Police are investigating after a woman claims an Uber driver attempted to sexually assault her.
According to Ross Township police, the incident was reported around 8:45 p.m. Tuesday.
"There was contact that was unwanted," Ross Township Police Det. Brian Kohlhepp said. "It was physical contact; however, it was very limited."
The victim claims she called for an Uber to take her to the Barrel Junction Bar on Route 8 in Shaler Township. The female got into the front seat of the vehicle, but the driver stopped before the destination.
At that time, the driver allegedly started making unwanted sexual advances on the female. The victim was able to push the driver off of her.
"They reported that during the ride, there was some unwanted sexual advances that were made by the driver. The victim reported that she did request an Uber ride and was on the way when the driver pulled off the road and started to make some advances," Det. Kohlhepp said. "She was able to push him off, and he then continued on with the ride."
The driver took her to her destination, where she called police. She was not hurt in the incident.
KDKA's Brenda Waters: "Why did she stay in the car? Wasn't she afraid to continue on with this guy?"
Det. Kohlhepp: "That's information that we're working with the victim in trying to determine."
Police are currently working with Uber to obtain driver information in order to obtain a warrant.
"The information we're requesting has legal concerns. There's some protected information. They're requiring us to get a search warrant, but that's common with this. I wouldn't say that they're not being cooperative because that's typical protocol," Det. Kohlhepp said.
Police are not expecting to obtain the warrant before the Thanksgiving holiday.
Meanwhile, a spokesperson from Uber says that driver has been banned pending the investigation.
