Official: Dispute Between Neighbors Sends SWAT To Wilkinsburg
WILKINSBURG (KDKA) -- A man was taken into custody after police officers and members of the SWAT team surrounded a home during a standoff this morning in Wilkinsburg.
After several hours, the man was eventually led out of his Wilkinsburg home in handcuffs.
The SWAT team was called in after authorities say he allegedly broke into a neighbor's house a few doors down. A lieutenant who did not want to go on camera says the man then refused to come out of his own home when police arrived.
"Without getting too into it because we're still investigating, it was basically a dispute between neighbors over some money and that's what led to the police being called up here," said Lt. Jason Lando, of the Pittsburgh police.
The incident happened on Maplewood Avenue.
The homeowner tells KDKA that the suspect used a garbage can to smash the window. A source close to the investigation says that initial dispute was between the homeowner's grandson who allegedly owed the suspect $400
"I had to call them twice. Twice he tried to get in here," he said. "I am just shaking because this was too much."
"When the officers arrived, he eventually went back into his house and refused to come out," said Lt. Lando. "That's when the SWAT team was called."
There was additional concern and reinforcement brought in because a shotgun shell was found inside the home when police initially entered. Upon searching the home later, a shotgun was found and removed.
As of 10 a.m., the man had not been officially charged. Officials say he has to undergo a mental and behavioral evaluation first.
Pittsburgh police would not comment on any future charges.
