Police shoot, kill man in SWAT standoff in Pittsburgh
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) — Police fatally shot a man during a SWAT standoff in Pittsburgh's Allentown neighborhood on Friday.
According to the Allegheny County Police Department, officials were attempting to serve a warrant at an apartment on East Warrington Avenue for a 45-year-old male who had previous felony convictions when the man fired multiple shots at officers.
Officers returned fire, and the man proceeded to barricade himself inside the home. After the man barricaded himself inside the apartment, police opened fire for a second time, killing the suspect. It was not immediately clear what led to the second round of shots.
Allegheny County police said this all started on Christmas Eve when Pittsburgh police were informed that the 45-year-old man had a gun.
"Negotiators attempted to bring this to a peaceful conclusion," Allegheny County Police Department Superintendent Christopher Kearns said on Friday.
Law enforcement has not identified the victim or police officers involved. The Allegheny County Police Department's Homicide Unit has initiated an investigation. No police officers were injured on Friday, authorities said.
People who live in the apartment complex said they awoke to gunshots and law enforcement made people leave the building.
"I was scared, shook and confused," one resident said.
A woman who said the man was the father of her child spoke to KDKA after the deadly shooting. She said he was on medication and told negotiators that when they called her during the standoff.
