Police Seek Access To Franklin Regional Suspect's Cell Phone History
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) - Investigators looking into the stabbings at Franklin Regional High School want access to Alex Hribal's family's cell phone records.
Hribal, 16, is accused of stabbing more than 20 people before classes started on April 9. All of the victims have been released from the hospital.
Authorities think Hribal may have used one of the family's cell phones to make threatening phone calls the night before the stabbing rampage. Two students say they received menacing phone calls the night before the stabbings; one of them said they thought it was Hribal calling.
Defense attorney Anthony Bompiani says, "It leaves open text messages, cell phone records, cell phone calls, emails, all of that stuff that previously may have been handled via phone call is now all being recorded in print, and is discoverable."
Investigators have already seized Hribal's cell phone, which was inside his backpack in his locker the day of the incident.
Last week, Hribal's attorneys asked a judge to move him to a secure, mental health treatment facility.
They say Hribal was diagnosed with Schizophrenia and a depressive disorder, and needs to get help for those conditions.
Hribal is charged with attempted homicide, aggravated assault and possessing a weapon at school.
He pleaded not guilty to the stabbings, and is set to go to trial in the case. His attorney requested a jury trial.
