Police Searching For 2 Vehicles After Deadly Hit & Run
BALDWIN (KDKA) -- Allegheny County police are asking for help from the public following a deadly hit and run accident in Baldwin Thursday evening.
According to Allegheny County police, the crash happened after 8:30 p.m. along Route 51.
Authorities have identified the victim as 50-year-old Robert Stockdale of McKees Rocks. He was pronounced dead at Mercy Hospital.
Police say Stockdale was attempting to cross Route 51. Dressed in dark clothing, witnesses reported watching as a white van slammed into him.
"About 8:47 [p.m.], we got a call last night from a person that reported seeing someone lying in the road on Route 51," said Chief Michael Scott, of Baldwin Police.
Police say they want the public's help in identifying the vehicles and drivers involved in the accident.
Investigators describe the first vehicle as a white Chevrolet Express van or GMC Savana with a model year of 2003 to 2007. It will be missing the passenger-side sideview mirror.
Authorities say witnesses also described a small, dark-colored vehicle also hitting Stockdale, and also leaving the scene.
Police say both were last seen heading in the direction of Pittsburgh on Route 51 just north of the cloverleaf.
"Our officers responded along with Baldwin EMS, and found an individual had been hit by one or multiple vehicles and was in cardiac arrest," said Chief Scott.
The investigation was turned over to Allegheny County police.
Chief Scott added though that Route 51 can be a very dangerous road for pedestrians, and they have previously contacted PennDOT to work on ways to make it safer.
"It's a very busy roadway. Multiple cars travel it at all times of the day and night," he said. "And we do have a significant amount of accidents on that roadway."
Anyone with information on the case is being asked to contact the Allegheny County Police Homicide Unit at 412-473-1300.
