Mt. Washington Bank Robbery Suspect Fatally Shot By Police
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – Police rushed to the scene of an attempted bank robbery on Mount Washington Friday morning.
According to police, the robbery happened at the First Niagara Bank on Shiloh Street around 10 a.m.
The suspect -- identified by the medical examiner's office as 21-year-old Raymone Davis of Mount Oliver -- was critically injured after being shot by an off-duty police officer inside the bank.
After firing the one round, the officer took Davis into custody. He was then transported to UPMC Mercy Hospital in critical condition. He died around 4:50 p.m., according to the medical examiner's office.
"An officer was working a secondary employment detail when a young, black male between the ages of 19 and 23 came into the bank, presented a firearm and ordered everybody to the ground. The officer was in a position at the rear of the bank, announced, 'Pittsburgh Police,' to which the offender pointed the gun in the officer's direction. She fired one single round that round struck the subject in his left side," Pittsburgh Police Commander Larry Scirotto said.
Scirotto went on to say that the officer tended to Davis before paramedics arrived.
Police say Davis's gun was loaded, with a single round in the chamber.
The off-duty officer has been placed on administrative leave, which is the normal protocol whenever an officer's weapon is fired. They are routinely placed on leave for 48 hours.
The reason there was an off-duty officer in the bank is due to three robberies there in the past two months. It is unclear if this incident is connected to the other two at this time.
Friday night, police sources said a second suspect may have been involved in the abortive hold-up, and they suspect he may have been the would-be getaway driver.
The FBI is investigating the robbery. The district attorney is investigating the shooting, as per standard protocol in any police-involved shooting in Allegheny County.
