Police Pursuit Ends In Crash, Driver Death
LAWRENCEVILLE (KDKA)- A police chase in Lawrenceville ended early this morning with a crash, which ultimately killed the driver.
Police say it started when an officer spotted a car pulling onto Liberty Avenue without its headlights on. That happened at the intersection with 16th Street.
When the officer tried to pull the car over, it took off down Liberty Avenue.
The driver was 18-year-old Sara Glaser of Shadyside.
A few blocks away, the car hit a garbage truck and flipped over near 34th Street. Glaser was ejected from the car -- police say she was likely not wearing a seat belt.
The intersection of Herron Avenue and 34th Street was blocked for several hours while police investigated.
"We have homicide and our collision investigation unit investigating the case right now," Cmdr. Scott Schubert of the Pittsburgh Police said.
The officer responding to the scene said upon arriving, all he could see was a could of smoke.
Glaser was taken to UPMC Mercy and in critical condition. She died at the hospital a short while later.
Police say the Toyota Echo she was driving was reported stolen out of McCandless Township. The owner said at the time that she knew who stole it.
