Police Probe New Castle Murder-Suicide

LAWRENCE COUNTY (KDKA) – Half-a-dozen State Police officers were on the scene of a murder-suicide in New Castle.

According to police, the incident happened around 10:30 p.m. at a home on Ellwood Road.

Investigators say 29-year-old Justin Burnett and his stepfather, 60-year-old Douglas Weingartner, argued at the residence they shared.

A neighbor, who did not want to be identified, says he saw Burnett just last night.

"I saw the boy out next to the road and he waved like nothing was wrong," the neighbor said. "But evidently they had a little problem last night. They went into the bedroom and shot him four times, then he shot himself."

Burnett then allegedly shot Weingartner four times with a .40-caliber handgun. He then went downstairs into the living room and fatally shot himself, police say.

The neighbor was one of several people KDKA spoke with, who say the shooting culminates a stormy relationship between Weingartner and his stepson.

"His stepson didn't have a job, didn't work," a neighbor said. "He just sat and played video games all day. The only time he would leave the house is when somebody would come and pick him up and take him away. But him and his stepson had problems. Doug has told me, 'I can't get him to do nothing.'"

Weingartner owned an auto body shop in nearby Ellwood City and was well known in the community. People who know him say he will be missed as a business owner and neighbor.
