Police: Man Takes Officer On 100 MPH Chase, Swallows Crack

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- A man is facing charges after taking police on a wild chase, then allegedly swallowing and trying to hide crack cocaine.

It all started Friday night around 11:40 p.m. on State Route 119 in Connellsville City, Fayette County.

Police tried to pull over 40-year-old Jodi Shane Howell of Scottdale, Pa., near the BP gas station. However, they say Howell refused to pull over and led officers on a high-speed chase, going as fast as 100 miles per hour, while weaving in and out of traffic, nearly hitting several vehicles.

Eventually, police say Howell pulled over in New Stanton, Westmoreland County, and jumped out of the car, attempting to flee on foot.

When police caught up with Howell, they say he had a mouthful of crack cocaine that he refused to spit out. He was also taken to Forbes Regional Hospital, suspected of swallowing a "significant amount" of crack cocaine.

Howell faces multiple charges, including DUI and numerous traffic citations. He was also wanted on a bench warrant in Fayette County.

Howell is expected to be arraigned once he is out of the hospital.
