WEST MIFFLIN, Pa. (KDKA) - A man is behind bars for allegedly kidnapping and raping a woman in West Mifflin.
Police say 51-year-old Demetrius Pirl assaulted the 33-year-old woman in Duquesne before arranging to have her transported to his home in West Mifflin, the woman trying to shoot at him while he was dragging her to the vehicle. Pirl and the woman were in a past relationship.
"It was scary, it's scary to know you can live in a relatively safe neighborhood and something like that occurs," said Kim Hughes, a neighbor who went to high school with Pirl.
At his home, police say Pirl sexually assaulted her and tried to hide her from police officers. Pirl first allegedly hid the woman in his bathroom, then later in the basement where he locked the door and then moved his refrigerator in front of it to hide the door from police.
Police found her when investigators say Pirl let his guard down and the woman tried to make an escape.
"I actually thought it was the neighbors' grandkids that were there because they were banging, I really didn't pay much attention to it. Now it kind of bothers me," said Hughes.
The woman was able to use her Apple Watch to text a friend saying to call the police. She was taken to the hospital where she was treated for abrasions and facial fractures.
"I would've never in life expected anything from him of this nature. Never," said Hughes.
Pirl was arrested and taken to the Allegheny County Jail on multiple charges, including aggravated assault, kidnapping, rape and false imprisonment.
