Police Investigating Castle Shannon Burglaries

CASTLE SHANNON (KDKA) - Police in Castle Shannon are investigating an overnight burglary where the intruders broke into an occupied home.

According to police, it's been a great summer until these last few weeks with a series of brazen burglaries.

"Somebody went in through a rear kitchen window into an occupied residence, found a purse on the first floor, took it in the kitchen, emptied the contents, took cash and then fled through the side door. This is the second type of burglary that's been reported in the past week. We've actually had three burglaries since [Aug. 7]," Chief Kenneth M. Truver said.

The latest crime along Sixth Street and the burglars weren't the only ones inside as the residents were home and sleeping.

"What's especially concerning with the overnight burglary is the potential for the homeowner to confront the suspect. Nothing good can come of that. It's scary is what it is," Chief Truver said.

All three break-ins have been at the rear of residences on the first floor. Unlocked windows made it easy for the suspects, but you can make it much harder for any potential burglars by locking up and looking around.

"Please keep their eyes and ears open and certainly call 911 if they see suspicious people, vehicles, or activity. We need their help," Chief Truver said.

If someone breaks into your home, retreat to a room, lock the door and call 911.

Chances are the burglars aren't terribly afraid of you or they wouldn't have broken into your home, but when it comes to locking horns with police that's quite a different matter.
