Police Investigating After Boy Allegedly Brings Knife To School

HARMAR TOWNSHIP (KDKA) -- Police in Harmar Township are investigating after they say an 8-year-old allegedly took a knife into his elementary school.

Authorities say the alleged incident happened in the bathroom of an elementary school in the Allegheny Valley School District.

"We're very concerned about that," said Lt. Otto Gaal, of Harmar Township Police. "The children, we want to make sure they are safe in school. I'm sure all the parents up at the school district are concerned about it. And hopefully, we can come to some type of solution."

Police say the 8-year-old is accused of holding the knife to the another child's throat and making a slashing motion. The child wasn't hurt.

School officials say all weapons are banned from the school.

In addition to the police, the district attorney and Children Youth and Family Services are involved in the investigation.

"Could be anything ranging from talking with the parents, [psychological] evaluation," said Lt. Gaal. "Right now, it's still an ongoing investigation and we'll see what happens from here."

In a statement, the school district says it is taking "appropriate actions." They sent out letters to parents to explain the incident.
