State Constable Questioned, But Released After Fatal Homewood Shooting
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- William Jackson, Jr., a Pa. state constable, was taken into custody late Wednesday afternoon by Pittsburgh Police after he shot and killed a 42-year-old man in Homewood in what police call a domestic dispute.
It happened at a home on Oakwood Street.
Jackson, 38, was handcuffed, put in the back of a police wagon and driven to headquarters.
Pittsburgh Police Lt. Kevin Kraus told reporters Wednesday night that Jackson was questioned and then released, and "he's not been charged at this point; however, it's not to say he won't be."
Lt. Kraus said police will confer with the Allegheny County District Attorney about possible charges.
Jackson, while a certified constable, is not registered to carry a firearm in Allegheny County, according to investigators.
Authorities say he shot and killed the 42-year-old gunman on the second floor of the Oakwood Street home, after the gunman wounded a 19-year-old.
The teenager was the son of the gunman's fiancé, who also lived at the house. He was taken to Mercy Hospital in stable condition.
The dead man was a convicted felon.
Lt. Kraus said at a news conference Wednesday evening that the gunman pulled out a revolver and fired twice at the teenager before Jackson fired his gun six times.
Earlier in the day, the gunman and his fiancé, who also lived at the house, had been have arguing with one another, and the woman called her daughter, who showed up at the home along with Jackson, who is described as her boyfriend.
Two children, ages 5 and 7, who lived at the same house were not present at the time.
Less than an hour earlier, two men and a woman were shot and wounded in the 1000-block of Brushton Avenue.
One of the men is in critical condition, but police say he and the other victims are expected to survive.
People who live nearby reported hearing as many as 30 gunshots.
Police do not believe the two shootings were connected.
"We do not believe initially that they are connected, but that will be looked at… possibility will be looked into," said Commander Tim O'Connor, of Pittsburgh Police. "Right now, we're kind of the thought that they were not connected, they just seemed to happen in a close geographical relationship to each other and within a close time period."
The investigation continues into both incidents.
The incident on Brushton Avenue also prompted the lock down of the Pittsburgh Public School Student Achievement Center on Brushton Avenue.
The lock down was in place for about 25 minutes, but authorities said they began dismissing the students just before 3 p.m.
